Holistic Health:  The Evolution of Workplace Wellness

Corporate Uncertainty With the New Health Care Reform !

New challenges mask total rewards opportunities

The PPACA presents employers with an unprecedented opportunity to reshape their deal with employees and their total rewards package overall. But, at this point, most employers predict health care reforms will have no impact on their ability to achieve key workforce management goals such as improving productivity, attraction and retention, and providing a competitive reward package.:  http://www.towerswatson.com/united-states/research/1935

Here’s a Great Across Corporate Evaluation of Heath of Employees by Tower Watson (Notice Stress Area):  http://www.apollolife.com/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=1hHYeP9cvd8%3D&tabid=777

"Companies that have implemented high performing corporate wellness programs have annual health care costs that are $1,800 less per employee than organizations without such programs, the Towers Watson report found. In a company that employs 10,000 people, this translates to an annual cost savings of $18 million." http://www.tntgetfit.com/interior.cfm?pid=corporate%20programs

Healthcare Costs are Increasing -  Healthcare costs are at a record high of $1.7 trillion with no signs of holding steady let alone decreasing.  The typical cost of annual health care spending is over $5,000 per individuals and with dependents nearly $10,000.

Current data shows that health care related costs now cost North Carolina corporations thousands of dollars per employee, a year.

Most Diseases can be Prevented -  Although it sounds unbelievable, professionals indicate that avoidable illness makes up 60% - 70% of the entire burden of illness in the USA

In North Carolina, it is estimated that more than 53% of all deaths are preventable, and that 2/3 of all avoidable deaths are because of tobacco use, lack of exercise, and poor nutrition.

Stress Levels are Increasing -   as business resources become less and businesses adopt leaner work practices, the effects of absenteeism and productivity lost have a greater impact.

In a recent national poll, 78 percent of Americans described their jobs as stressful, and the majority felt that stress levels have become worse over the last 10 years. Moreover, high levels of organizational stress can negatively affect a company by increasing injuries, absenteeism, and health care costs while reducing productivity.

Simple solutions like stress management education, flexible work schedules, quality social interaction, and increased participation in company decision-making can improve stress levels in the worksite.

What is NOT having a Wellness Program costing your organization?

Consider the health risk factors that are increasing chronic diseases for adults -

o  59% of adults are overweight or obese

o  More than 60 percent of American adults don’t exercise regularly

o  More than 75% of adults don’t consume the minimum recommendations for fruits and vegetables

o  Heart disease is the most common cause of death and the leading cause of death in smokers

o  26 percent of workers reported they were often or very often burned out or stressed by their work
